Rathra, Ireland

Rathra (also called Ratra, Rathrar or “Rathbarna Enclosure Complex”) is a quadrivallate earthwork located 2.4 miles (4km) east of Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. It is a very large enclosure - 525 feet (160m) in diameter N-S and 486 feet (148m) diameter E-W. There are only a few of these quadrivallate enclosures in Ireland and this one is probably the most spectacular. These enclosures are thought to have been places of assembly and ceremonial sites.
